John Askew: Garstang : A Pictorial History

Garstang : A Pictorial History

Description

The ancient Lancashire market town of Garstang has a rich and varied history. The earliest written record of the settlement is in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it is referred to as 'Cherestanc', and it has played host to vibrant markets since the 1300s. In the early twentieth century, photographers produced charming postcards of the area, which now provide an important record of a bygone era. Local author John Askew has selected the best postcards from his own collection, and accompanied them with substantial, informative captions. From sunny market days, to the tranquil Royal Oak Field, or a long-gone tree or thatched cottage, each image represents a unique moment in time, as readers are taken on a wonderful pictorial tour through Garstang's past. Starting at the railway station, the tour passes through Catterall, Bowgreave and Bonds before reaching Garstang, and continues along the River Wyre, finishing in Barnacre and Nether Wyresdale. There are many interesting accounts of long-ago incidents, such as the night in 1761 when Mr Styth's 'pretty house' burnt down, destroying the town's charter, and the disorderly bonfire nights when burning tar barrels were paraded through the streets. Together with an excellent introduction that tells the early history of Garstang, including accounts of the manor, market and fairs, this pictorial tour makes a unique, beautifully produced little book and will be fascinating reading for anybody interested in the history of the Garstang area.

Each chapter is named after one of the Hours of the Divine Office, and summons vividly to life an hour of the day or night in the garden of today and in the gardens of the past, from the crunch of grass underfoot at midnight on a frosty New Year's Eve to the drip of trees in a melancholy March dawn; from a perfumed May Day morning when the whole world seems sixteen again, to the enervating heat of a Midsummer noon; from the bloom of blue-black damsons picked on a golden September afternoon to the smell Getting into Nursing free ebook of holly and ivy cut in the dusk of a cold Christmas Eve. Together they describe the arc of the gardening year, and the arc of a life, from darkness into light, and from light back into darkness once more. The ultimate spouse. The dream marriage. Where do they fall on your wish list? If your marriage seems less than ideal, is your patience with God wearing thin? It's possible to get caught up in our own dreams and expect God to deliver on our terms. But what if God's dream for your marriage differs from yours? What if his plan is to sanctify you through the struggles of a challenging relationship? If your dream for the ideal marriage were to crumble, would your hope and joy crumble with it? They don't have to. In this eye-opening booklet, Paul David Tripp shows how refocusing your dreams on God-centered priorities can invigorate both you and your marriage.
